The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Sunday Olawale for allegedly circulating false information on social media claiming that bandits had invaded Are Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Ado Ekiti, noting that the suspect was apprehended by the Rapid Response Squad following an investigation into the misleading video.

According to the police, the video, which surfaced online on June 12, 2026, falsely alleged that bandits had attacked Are Ekiti. Authorities later confirmed that the claim was entirely untrue.

Abutu stated that Olawale was arrested on June 14 at the Ekute area of Ado Ekiti for cyberstalking and spreading false information capable of causing public panic and disrupting law and order.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to sharing the false content but failed to provide any convincing explanation for his actions.

The police spokesperson emphasized that there was no bandit attack in Are Ekiti or any other part of Ekiti State.

“The Ekiti State Police Command wishes to reiterate that there was no bandit invasion in Are Ekiti or anywhere in the state,” Abutu said.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Michael Falade, warned against the dissemination of fake news and other misleading content that could create fear among residents.

He urged members of the public to verify information before sharing it on social media, stressing that the Command would not tolerate acts capable of undermining public peace and security.
