Residents of Gwande District in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State have been thrown into mourning following the killing of their traditional ruler, Saf Samuel Alaket, in a deadly ambush carried out by suspected gunmen.
The attack, which reportedly occurred on Tuesday evening, has sent shockwaves across the community and reignited concerns over the persistent security challenges facing parts of Plateau State.
According to reports, the traditional ruler was returning home after attending a meeting of the Bokkos Traditional Council when his vehicle was ambushed along the Sha District axis near Daffo community. The incident reportedly happened at about 7:30 p.m.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers laid in wait before launching the attack near the boundary between Sha District and Daffo, targeting the monarch’s vehicle as he approached his hometown. Details surrounding the circumstances of the attack remain unclear, while residents continue to demand answers from security agencies.
The death of Saf Samuel Alaket has been described as a major blow to the Gwande community, where he was regarded as a respected traditional leader known for his commitment to peace, unity, and community development.
Community member Aten Pukat described the incident as a painful and devastating loss, saying the entire Bokkos area had been left in shock by the tragic development.
“The death of the traditional ruler is a painful loss to the people of Gwande and the entire Bokkos community,” he reportedly said.
Following news of the killing, residents expressed grief and disbelief, with many describing the attack as another troubling reminder of the insecurity that continues to affect communities across Plateau State.
The incident reportedly generated tension in parts of Bokkos as residents struggled to come to terms with the loss. However, local youth leader Christopher Luka said community leaders and stakeholders moved quickly to calm the situation and prevent further unrest.
According to Luka, normalcy has since returned to the area, although many residents remain deeply concerned about their safety and the security of their communities.

The killing comes at a time when Plateau State continues to face security challenges, with several communities recording violent incidents in recent months. Attacks on villages, communal clashes, and incidents linked to armed groups have contributed to growing fears among residents and renewed calls for stronger security measures.
Many residents are now urging both state and federal authorities to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks. Community leaders have also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and for those responsible to be brought to justice.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the incident despite reports that efforts were made to obtain a response from the authorities.
The tragic death of the traditional ruler has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved security across Plateau State, as communities continue to grapple with fear, uncertainty, and the threat of violence.
Residents say they are now waiting for answers—and justice—as investigations into the attack continue.
